Bingo is a game of chance that enjoys a high level of success across the world. The game traditionally takes place in a Bingo hall, although technically it could be played anywhere, and a Bingo caller draws numbers randomly which are then announced to the assembled players. Players mark off the numbers as they’re called on their bingo tickets, which have fifteen numbers (from one to ninety) arranged in rows of five. If an entire row of numbers is completed then the players is entitled to a monetary prize. The prizes increase as more lines are complete, the top prize being awarded to people who score a full house, which is when all fifteen of their numbers have been called.

In the UK Bingo has a long standing association with seaside holidays and is often thought to be the reserve of elderly women. However this is not strictly the case as bingo halls are operated all over the country and are now attracting people from all walks of life. In modern Bingo clubs the use of nicknames for the numbers by the callers has becoming increasingly rare. Well known nicknames would accompany the draw of certain numbers, such as ‘Two fat ladies, eighty eight’, but modern bingo halls are more focused on the competitive, rather than social aspect of bingo so these phrases have fallen out of favour. Some traditional bingo halls maintain the use of these phrases to maintain a sense of nostalgia.
